Utah Trombonist

About Zachary Crawford

Thanks for taking an interest in my trombone studio. I'm originally from Michigan, and most of my musical influences are from that part of the country. When I turned 14, I went to Interlochen Arts Academy, a private boarding school specializing in intensive arts education. While there, I studied with Thomas Riccobono. Under his tutelage, I developed a sense of how wonderful making music with the trombone could be.

Upon graduation, I decided to go to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, one of the best music schools in the country. I studied with Carl Lenthe, best known for his almost 30 years as principal trombonist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany. At this time, I also had the great pleasure to study for a semester with Charlie Vernon, bass trombonist of the Chicago Symphony.

After two years at IU, I served as a missionary for the LDS church in the California San Diego Mission. I then continued my studies with Ava Ordman at Michigan State University.

After two great years studying with Ava, I transferred to Brigham Young University and studied with Will Kimball for a semester. By a huge stroke of good fortune, Rusty McKinney (bass trombonist, Utah Symphony) began teaching the bass trombonists at BYU and I got to study with him for three great semesters. After almost seven years as an undergraduate music student, I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Music.

Currently, I am busy preparing for orchestra auditions, teaching trombone students, and freelancing around the Salt Lake area as opportunities arise.
