  • Excerpt List
  • This is the complete list for an upcoming orchestra audition - all first takes (pretty rough). It's 15 minutes long, so it may take a little while to load. Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

    • zacharycrawford: Subdivide eighth notes in your head to get the timing right for all the parts. The first notes in the third and fifth measures should be included in the written decrescendo. Don't worry too much about making them short. An eighth note is pretty long at this speed.

    • zacharycrawford: In measures 9 and 10, watch that your dotted-quarter/eighth rhythm has an eighth note and not a sixteenth at the end. Your G's are generally sharp. Your legato was very nice. Way to go for the natural slurs across the partials rather than cheating with the tongue.

    • zacharycrawford: That was great.

    • zacharycrawford: It is definitely harder in the lower positions to do a clean slur. Try your hardest to imagine that the outer positions are just as easy to play in as the closer positions, since eventually you want it to sound just as good out there as closer in. To improve this, do slur exercises in 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th positions using the valve.

    • zacharycrawford: If you have to breathe in the middle of the phrase and you choose to do it after a quarter note, try to hold it for at least an eighth note. That way it won't sound as choppy.

    • zacharycrawford: The purpose of the crescendos is to help you to blow through the slur. Try to crescendo more in the first note so you are pushing the air into the second. Watch the E natural in measure 11.
